Piqué, Bird’s-Eye and Mesh: The Anatomy of Breathable Polyester Knits

Because polyester does not absorb moisture, the cooling comes from structure: knit-tuck cells and deliberate holes open air channels in the fabric. Within one family the weight band is wide — mesh 70–250 g/m², piqué 100–370 g/m² — and breathability cannot be compared without reading pore and weight together. Air permeability is measured to ISO 9237.

From closed texture to open net

In piqué, raised honeycomb cells open tiny channels but the cloth stays covering. Bird’s-eye (mock) mesh gives a clearer pore through knit-tuck dots. Breathable micro mesh is fine, densely holed and almost sheer (lining). Sports net is the most open, coolest but least covering. Spacer mesh joins two faces with vertical monofilament yarns to form a breathable cushioning.

Is piqué the same as mesh?

No. Piqué forms a textured surface with knit-tuck but is not 'holed'; mesh/net carries deliberate openings for air. Both serve the same performance goal — moisture management and coolness — but differ in coverage and suitability as an outer fabric.

Which structure should I choose for which use?

For a visible outer fabric with coolness, birdseye mesh or a light piqué; for maximum airflow in a jersey panel, sports net (with a lining if needed); for lining and inner panels, fine air-permeable mesh; for a padded, structural panel, double-face spacer mesh. Piqué keeps its opacity, while the open net is the coolest but the least covering.

Can breathability be compared on hole size alone?

No. Two fabrics cannot be compared until pore and weight are read TOGETHER; within one family the band is wide (net/mesh 70–250 g/m², piqué 100–370). Piqué’s raised cells open channels while the fabric stays opaque; birdseye gives more pronounced pores. The measurable counterpart is air permeability, reported to ISO 9237.
