Scuba Fabric: How It Differs from Ponte and Neoprene, and the Weight Map

Scuba is an elastane double-face knit made on a double bed: flat-faced, lightly springy, four-way stretch. It is not neoprene — there is no foam inside it. It is not ponte either: ponte stretches two ways and carries a faint rib, scuba stretches four ways and reads flat. This guide separates the three and maps the 200–400 g/m² band garment by garment.

Scuba is the most misnamed item in knitted fabrics. One word is applied to three different materials in the market: the foam-cored neoprene of a wetsuit, the ponte di roma of tailored patterns, and actual scuba — an elastane double knit with a flat face and four-way stretch. For a buyer this is not an academic distinction: a mislabelled sampling round costs two weeks and a pattern trial. The distinctions below are drawn from the production side, that is, from what the machine actually does.

What scuba is, defined by construction

Scuba is knitted on a double-bed circular machine in a dense loop arrangement, with elastane fed into the structure. The result is a single-piece cloth: both faces smooth and matte, cut edges that neither curl nor unravel, and a body that is full yet springy. A typical composition is 90–95% polyester with 5–10% elastane; the elastane share governs the four-way stretch and the recovery. The full hand comes from the knit itself — no layer is bonded on.

Scuba and neoprene: the dividing line is the foam core

Neoprene is a three-layer bonded material — fabric, foam, fabric. The foam in the middle makes it waterproof and insulating, but it does not breathe and its thickness complicates sewing. Scuba has no such core; the cloth is knitted, nothing is laminated. The shared name comes from appearance: scuba imitates the firm, bodied stance of neoprene. The practical test is simple — look at a cut edge. Neoprene shows a visible band of foam in the middle; on scuba the cut is loops all the way through.

Scuba and ponte: stretch direction and face

Ponte di Roma (Punto di Roma) is also knitted on a double bed and is scuba’s closest relative. They part on three points. First the face: ponte carries a faint horizontal rib, scuba reads flat. Second the stretch: ponte typically moves two ways and is more stable, scuba moves four ways with more spring. Third the job: ponte belongs in tailored trousers and blazers that need the pattern held still, while scuba belongs in bodysuits, leggings and structured dresses that must sit on the body and come back.

The third confusion: scuba crepe

The cloth sold as “scuba crepe” has a pebbled, grainy face and a more fluid hand; it usually runs at 200–300 g/m² and lighter than flat scuba. It comes from the same family but it is a different surface and it falls differently. Saying “scuba” when you request a sample is not enough — state whether you want the smooth face or the crepe face, or you will lose the first round.

The weight map: which band goes to which garment

Weight is the single strongest variable in scuba. The 200–250 g/m² band is for pieces that follow the pattern: leggings, bodysuits, lighter tops — light and mobile, though opacity under tension must be verified separately through knit density. The 250–350 g/m² range is the working span of structured work — dresses, skirts, blazers and shapewear panels; the trade calls this the tailor’s band. From 350 to 400 g/m² the cloth goes to outer layers, built jackets and decorative use: thermal insulation rises and drape falls. Fersan’s production window is 200–400 g/m².

What the elastane share changes

Below roughly 5% elastane the cloth stops being genuinely four-way and becomes comfort stretch; above 10% compression behaviour begins, and in the dyehouse the migration of disperse dye into the elastane phase starts to press on wet rub fastness. That threshold also has a customs meaning: knitted fabric containing 5% or more elastomeric yarn by weight is declared under 6004.10, and anything below it under 6006.32. The elastane share therefore sets not only the hand but the declaration.

Sewing and processing: where it goes wrong

The most common mistake with scuba is iron and press temperature: a high elastane share is heat-sensitive, and excess heat fatigues the elastane so the piece permanently loses its recovery. Because cut edges neither curl nor fray, overlocking is not compulsory — which is what allows clean finishes in precise, pattern-driven design. If seam impressions are unwanted, needle and stitch density must be chosen for an elastane knit. Dimensional stability is built by heat-setting and confirmed by measurement after repeated washing.

The ordering side: what to ask

There are four questions to put to a scuba supplier: what is the weight window, what is the elastane share and across which band does it vary, what is the minimum order per colour, and can a recycled (rPET) version be documented within GRS scope. Supply chains quoting by the tonne are common; for a brand developing a collection, a band of 500–1,000 kg per colour is a markedly more reachable threshold. Sampling and lab dips run outside that threshold.
